RESUMO

Neuromorphic platforms are gaining popularity due to their superior efficiency, low power consumption, and adaptable parallel signal processing capabilities, overcoming the limitations of traditional von Neumann architecture. We conduct an in-depth investigation into the factors influencing the resistive switching mechanism in memristor devices utilizing lead iodide (PbI2). We establish correlations between device performance and morphological features, unveiling synaptic like behaviour of device making it suitable for range of flexible neuromorphic applications. Notably, a highly reliable unipolar switching mechanism is identified, exhibiting stability even under mechanical strain (with a bending radius of approximately 4 mm) and in high humidity environment (at 75% relative humidity) without the need for encapsulation. The investigation delves into the complex interplay of charge transport, ion migration and the active interface, elucidating the factors contributing to the remarkable resistive switching observed in PbI2-based memristors. The detailed findings highlight synaptic behaviors akin to the modulation of synaptic strengths, with an impressive potentiation and depression of 2 × 104 cycles, emphasizing the role of spike time-dependent plasticity (STDP). The flexible platform demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving a simulated accuracy rate of 95.06% in recognizing modified patterns from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset with just 30 training epochs. Ultimately, this research underscores the potential of PbI2-based flexible memristor devices as versatile component for neuromorphic computing. Moreover, it demonstrate the robustness of PbI2 memristors in terms of their resistive switching capabilities, showcasing resilience both mechanically and electrically. This underscores their potential in replicating synaptic functions for advanced information processing systems.

Biocomposites based on wheat gluten and reinforced with carbon fibers were produced in line with the strive to replace fossil-based plastics with microplastic-free alternatives with competing mechanical properties. The materials were first extruded/compounded and then successfully injection molded, making the setup adequate for the current industrial processing of composite plastics. Furthermore, the materials were manufactured at very low extrusion and injection temperatures (70 and 140 °C, respectively), saving energy compared to the compounding of commodity plastics. The sole addition of 10 vol % fibers increased yield strength and stiffness by a factor of 2-4 with good adhesion to the protein. The biocomposites were also shown to be biodegradable, lixiviating into innocuous molecules for nature, which is the next step in the development of sustainable bioplastics. The results show that an industrial protein coproduct reinforced with strong fibers can be processed using common plastic processing techniques. The enhanced mechanical performance of the reinforced protein-based matrix herein also contributes to research addressing the production of safe materials with properties matching those of traditional fossil-based plastics.

Worldwide new trends of online cyberbullying are emerging that impact on health and are a factor in adolescent suicide. The objective of this study is to know the development of scientific production and to compare the current trends that encompass the concepts of cyberaggression in young people (CAY) and cybervictimisation in young people (CVY). The methodology used in this study was descriptive with a bibliometric analysis on CAY with 481 documents and CVY with 1087 documents, in addition to a co-word analysis of both terms from the years 2017-2021. These data were extracted from the Web of Science database and network maps were made using VOSviewer software. The results show that the terms CAY and CVY were born in 2006 and have had a different evolutionary progression in the scientific literature until 2021, in addition, the area of psychology stands out with more research on other areas, developed countries are the ones that carry out more studies of CAY and CVY and that the term "suicide" is the most prominent term since 2018 from the CVY. Finally, a discussion and conclusion of the results was made, which can serve as a turning point for future lines of research.

We unveil the multifractal behavior of Ising spin glasses in their low-temperature phase. Using the Janus II custom-built supercomputer, the spin-glass correlation function is studied locally. Dramatic fluctuations are found when pairs of sites at the same distance are compared. The scaling of these fluctuations, as the spin-glass coherence length grows with time, is characterized through the computation of the singularity spectrum and its corresponding Legendre transform. A comparatively small number of site pairs controls the average correlation that governs the response to a magnetic field. We explain how this scenario of dramatic fluctuations (at length scales smaller than the coherence length) can be reconciled with the smooth, self-averaging behavior that has long been considered to describe spin-glass dynamics.

PURPOSE: To examine the link between tremor and sex chromosome abnormalities, emphasizing the necessity of comprehensive physical examination. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 18-year-old man exhibited an isolated action tremor in both hands. Despite having no familial history of tremors and no identifiable secondary causes, his tall stature and learning difficulties suggested a genetic origin. His karyotype confirmed the diagnosis of Jacob's syndrome (XYY syndrome). Therapies with primidone and propranolol were ineffective for his tremor. CONCLUSIONS: Tremor can be caused by various conditions, and aneuploidies might often be overlooked as a cause. They should be considered in young patients with concrete phenotypes and negative familiar history of tremors. Karyotyping is a cost-effective diagnostic tool crucial for genetic counselling. Common treatments for tremors often yield unsatisfactory results in these cases.

PURPOSE: To review a multicentric series of lateral-type posterior fossa ependymomas operated in the last ten years and to analyze the factors related to clinical evolution and tumor survival. METHODS: Descriptive, retrospective study. Active members of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery were invited to participate in this multicentric study. Clinical and radiological data were incorporated to an open database. The role of histologic grade, grade of resection, postoperative morbidities, and clinical follow-up was evaluated through bivariate associations (chi-square), Kaplan-Meier's curves (log-rank test), and multivariate analysis (binary logistic regression). RESULTS: Fourteen centers entered the study, and 25 cases with a minimum follow-up of 6 months were included. There were 13 boys and 12 girls with a mean age close to 3 years. Mean tumor volume at diagnosis was over 60 cc. A complete resection was achieved in 8 patients and a near-total resection in 5 cases. Fifteen tumors were diagnosed as ependymoma grade 2 and ten as ependymoma grade 3. Major morbidity occurred postoperatively in 14 patients but was resolved in twelve within 6 months. There were six cases of death and 11 cases of tumor progression along the observation period. Mean follow-up was 44.8 months. Major morbidity was significantly associated with histologic grade but not with the degree of resection. Overall and progression-free survival were significantly associated with complete surgical resection. At the last follow-up, 16 patients carried a normal life, and three displayed a mild restriction according to Lansky's scale. CONCLUSIONS: Lateral-type posterior fossa ependymomas constitute a specific pathologic and clinical tumor subtype with bad prognosis. Gross total resection is the goal of surgical treatment, for it significantly improves prognosis with no additional morbidity. Neurological deficits associated to lower cranial nerve dysfunction are common, but most are transient. Deeper genetic characterization of these tumors may identify risk factors that guide new treatments and stratification of adjuvant therapies.

La trombosis venosa portal es una complicación infrecuente de los pacientes con cirrosis, que habitualmente aparece en las fases más avanzadas de la enfermedad. Aunque no disponemos de una evidencia sólida, la anticoagulación está indicada en algunos grupos de pacientes en los que la gravedad de la oclusión portal o en los que su especial situación de cara al trasplante requiere intentar la recanalización portal. Más allá de la recanalización, la anticoagulación parece tener un efecto beneficioso en la historia natural de la cirrosis, lo que plantea dudas sobre la oportunidad de su retirada una vez iniciada.(AU)

This study comprehensively analyzed green nanomagnetic iron oxide particles (GNMIOPs) synthesized using a green method, investigating their size, shape, crystallinity, aggregation, phase portions, stability, and magnetism. The influence of pH and washing solvents on the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles and their incorporation into PCL membranes was examined for biomedical applications. Polyphenols were utilized at different pH values (1.2, 7.5, and 12.5), with washing being performed using either ethanol or water. Characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, and VSM, were employed, along with evaluations of stability, magnetic properties, and antioxidant activity. The findings indicate that both pH levels and the washing process exert a substantial influence on several properties of NMIOPs. The particle sizes ranged from 6.6 to 23.5 nm, with the smallest size being observed for GNMIOPs prepared at pH 12.5. Higher pH values led to increased crystallinity, cubic Fe3O4 fractions, and reduced crystalline anisotropy. SEM and TEM analyses showed pH-dependent morphological variations, with increased aggregation being observed at lower pH values. GNMIOPs displayed exceptional magnetic behavior, with the highest saturation magnetization being observed in GNMIOPs prepared at pH 7.5 and 12.5 and subsequently washed with ethanol. The zeta potential measurements indicated a stability range for GNMIOPs spanning from -31.8 to -41.6 mV, while GNMIOPs synthesized under high-pH conditions demonstrated noteworthy antioxidant activity. Furthermore, it was explored how pH and washing solvent affected the morphology, roughness, and magnetic properties of GNMIOP-infused nanofiber membranes. SEM showed irregularities and roughness due to GNMIOPs, varying with pH and washing solvent. TEM confirmed better dispersion with ethanol washing. The magnetic response was stronger with ethanol-washed GNMIOPs, highlighting the influence of pH and washing solvent on membrane characteristics.

This comprehensive study investigates the properties of chemical nanomagnetic iron oxide particles (CNMIOPs) synthesized through a chemical method. The primary objective is to examine how pH levels and washing solvents affect the magnetism properties of these nanoparticles. Three different pH levels (1.2, 7.5, and 12.5) using NaOH and two washing solvents (ethanol and water) are employed. The characterization techniques include FTIR, SEM, TEM, XRD, ZSP, and VSM. Furthermore, the study incorporates two specific pH- and solvent-dependent CNMIOPs into PCL electrospun materials to analyze their performance in a targeted application. The results show that pH and the washing process significantly affect the CNMIOPs' properties. Higher pH levels result in smaller particles with higher crystallinity and reduce crystalline anisotropy. SEM and TEM analysis confirm different morphologies, including cubic, spherical, and elongated shapes. Ethanol-washed CNMIOPs exhibit superior magnetic behavior, with the highest magnetization saturation at pH 12.5 (Ms = 58.3 emu/g). The stability of the CNMIOPs ranges from -14.7 to -23.8 mV, and higher pH levels exhibit promising antioxidant activity. Furthermore, the study explores the effects of pH and washing solvents on CNMIOP-infused nanofiber membranes, with better dispersion observed with ethanol washing. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the properties and behavior of CNMIOPs under varying pH and washing conditions.

Portal vein thrombosis is an uncommon complication in patients with cirrhosis, typically manifesting in the advanced stages of the disease. Although robust evidence is lacking, anticoagulation is indicated in specific patient subgroups, either those with severe portal occlusion or those requiring attempted portal recanalization due to their unique transplant situation. Beyond recanalization, anticoagulation appears to exert a beneficial effect on the natural history of cirrhosis, which raises uncertainties about the appropriateness of discontinuing it once initiated.

Graphene oxide (GO) was used in this study as a template to successfully synthesize silicon oxide (SiOx) based 2D-nanomaterials, adapting the same morphological features as the GO sheets. By performing a controlled condensation reaction using low concentrations of GO (<0.5 wt%), the study shows how to obtain 2D-nanoflakes, consisting of GO-flakes coated with a silica precursor that were ca. 500 nm in lateral diameter and ca. 1.5 nm in thickness. XPS revealed that the silanes had linked covalently with the GO sheets at the expense of the oxygen groups present on the GO surface. The GO template was shown to be fully removable through thermal treatment without affecting the nanoflake morphology of the pure SiOx-material, providing a methodology for large-scale preparation of SiOx-based 2D nanosheets with nearly identical dimensions as the GO template. The formation of SiOx sheets using a GO template was investigated for two different silane precursors, (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), showing that both precursors were capable of accurately templating the graphene oxide template. Molecular modeling revealed that the choice of silane affected the number of layers coated on the GO sheets. Furthermore, rheological measurements showed that the relative viscosity was significantly affected by the specific surface area of the synthesized particles. The protocol used showed the ability to synthesize these types of nanoparticles using a common aqueous alcohol solvent, and yield larger amounts (∼1 g) of SiOx-sheets than what has been previously reported.

Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a fundamental role in plant growth and development processes such as seed germination, stomatal response or adaptation to stress, amongst others. Increases in the endogenous ABA content is recognized by specific receptors of the PYR/PYL/RCAR family that are coupled to a phosphorylation cascade targeting transcription factors and ion channels. Just like other receptors of the family, nuclear receptor PYR1 binds ABA and inhibits the activity of type 2C phosphatases (PP2Cs), thus avoiding the phosphatase-exerted inhibition on SnRK2 kinases, positive regulators which phosphorylate targets and trigger ABA signalling. Thioredoxins (TRXs) are key components of cellular redox homeostasis that regulate specific target proteins through a thiol-disulfide exchange, playing an essential role in redox homeostasis, cell survival, and growth. In higher plants, TRXs have been found in almost all cellular compartments, although its presence and role in nucleus has been less studied. In this work, affinity chromatography, Dot-blot, co-immunoprecipitation, and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays allowed us to identify PYR1 as a new TRXo1 target in the nucleus. Studies on recombinant HisAtPYR1 oxidation-reduction with wild type and site-specific mutagenized forms showed that the receptor underwent redox regulation involving changes in the oligomeric state in which Cys30 and Cys65 residues were implied. TRXo1 was able to reduce previously-oxidized inactive PYR1, thus recovering its capacity to inhibit HAB1 phosphatase. In vivo PYR1 oligomerization was dependent on the redox state, and a differential pattern was detected in KO and over-expressing Attrxo1 mutant plants grown in the presence of ABA compared to WT plants. Thus, our findings suggest the existence of a redox regulation of TRXo1 on PYR1 that may be relevant for ABA signalling and had not been described so far.

Fabric permittivity is critical for the manufacturing of wearable sensors and antennas as well as predicting how fabrics interact with electromagnetic fields. Engineers should also understand how permittivity changes under different temperatures, densities, and moisture content values, or when several fabrics are mixed in aggregates, when designing future applications such as microwave dryers. The permittivity of cotton, polyester, and polyamide fabric aggregates is investigated in this paper for a wide range of compositions, moisture content levels, density values, and temperature conditions around the 2.45 GHz ISM band using a bi-reentrant resonant cavity. The obtained results show extremely comparable responses for all characteristics investigated for single and binary fabric aggregates. Permittivity always increases as temperature, density, or moisture content levels rise. Moisture content is the most influential characteristic, causing enormous variations in the permittivity of aggregates. Fitting equations are supplied for all data, with exponential functions used to accurately model variation in temperature and polynomial functions employed to precisely model density and moisture content variations with low error levels. The temperature permittivity dependence of single fabrics without the influence of air gaps is also extracted from fabric and air aggregates by using complex refractive index equations for two-phase mixtures.

BACKGROUND: Neurological symptoms are common manifestation in acute COVID-19. This includes hyper- and hypokinetic movement disorders. Data on their outcome, however, is limited. METHODS: Cases with new-onset COVID-19-associated movement disorders were identified by searching the literature. Authors were contacted for outcome data which were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: Movement disorders began 12.6 days on average after the initial onset of COVID-19. 92% of patients required hospital admission (mean duration 23 days). In a fraction of patients (6 of 27; 22%; 4 males/2 females, mean age 66.8 years) the movement disorder (ataxia, myoclonus, tremor, parkinsonism) was still present after a follow-up period of 7.5 ± 3 weeks. Severe COVID-19 in general and development of encephalopathy were risk factors, albeit not strong predictors, for the persistence. CONCLUSIONS: The prognosis of new-onset COVID-19-associated movement disorder appears to be generally good. The majority recovered without residual symptoms within several weeks or months. Permanent cases may be due to unmasking of a previous subclinical movement disorder or due to vascular/demyelinating damage. Given the relatively low response rate of one third only and the heterogeneity of mechanisms firm conclusions on the (long-term) outome cannot, however, be drawn.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Previous meta-analyses demonstrated the safety and efficacy of anticoagulation in the recanalization of portal vein thrombosis in patients with cirrhosis. Whether this benefit translates into improved survival is unknown. We conducted an individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis to assess the effect of anticoagulation on all-cause mortality in patients with cirrhosis and portal vein thrombosis. METHODS: In this IPD meta-analysis, we selected studies comparing anticoagulation vs. no treatment in patients with cirrhosis and portal vein thrombosis from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases (until June 2020) (PROSPERO no.: CRD42020140026). IPD were subsequently requested from authors. The primary outcome - the effect of anticoagulation on all-cause mortality - was assessed by a one-step meta-analysis based on a competing-risk model with liver transplantation as the competing event. The model was adjusted for clinically relevant confounders. A multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression model was used to determine the effect of anticoagulation on recanalization. RESULTS: Individual data on 500 patients from five studies were included; 205 (41%) received anticoagulation and 295 did not. Anticoagulation reduced all-cause mortality (adjusted subdistribution hazard ratio 0.59; 95% CI 0.49-0.70), independently of thrombosis severity and recanalization. The effect of anticoagulation on all-cause mortality was consistent with a reduction in liver-related mortality. The recanalization rate was higher in the anticoagulation arm (adjusted odds ratio 3.45; 95% CI 2.22-5.36). The non-portal-hypertension-related bleeding rate was significantly greater in the anticoagulation group. CONCLUSIONS: Anticoagulation reduces all-cause mortality in patients with cirrhosis and portal vein thrombosis independently of recanalization, but at the expense of increasing non-portal hypertension-related bleeding. IMPACT AND IMPLICATIONS: Anticoagulation is effective in promoting recanalization of portal vein thrombosis in patients with cirrhosis, but whether this benefit translates into improved survival is controversial. Our individual patient data meta-analysis based on a competing-risk model with liver transplantation as the competing event shows that anticoagulation reduces all-cause mortality in patients with cirrhosis and portal vein thrombosis independently of recanalization. According to our findings, portal vein thrombosis may identify a group of patients with cirrhosis that benefit from long-term anticoagulation.

Nowadays, antioxidants and antibacterial activity play an increasingly vital role in biosystems due to the biochemical and biological reactions that involve free radicals and pathogen growth, which occur in many systems. For this purpose, continuous efforts are being made to minimize these reactions, including the use of nanomaterials as antioxidants and bactericidal agents. Despite such advances, iron oxide nanoparticles still lack knowledge regarding their antioxidant and bactericidal capacities. This includes the investigation of biochemical reactions and their effects on nanoparticle functionality. In green synthesis, active phytochemicals give nanoparticles their maximum functional capacity and should not be destroyed during synthesis. Therefore, research is required to establish a correlation between the synthesis process and the nanoparticle properties. In this sense, the main objective of this work was to evaluate the most influential process stage: calcination. Thus, different calcination temperatures (200, 300, and 500 °C) and times (2, 4, and 5 h) were studied in the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles using either Phoenix dactylifera L. (PDL) extract (green method) or sodium hydroxide (chemical method) as the reducing agent. The results show that calcination temperatures and times had a significant influence on the degradation of the active substance (polyphenols) and the final structure of iron oxide nanoparticles. It was found that, at low calcination temperatures and times, the nanoparticles exhibited small sizes, fewer polycrystalline structures, and better antioxidant activities. In conclusion, this work highlights the importance of green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles due to their excellent antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

With the increasing demand for artificially intelligent hardware systems for brain-inspired in-memory and neuromorphic computing, understanding the underlying mechanisms in the resistive switching of memristor devices is of paramount importance. Here, we demonstrate a two-step resistive switching set process involving a complex interplay among mobile halide ions/vacancies (I-/VI+) and silver ions (Ag+) in perovskite-based memristors with thin undoped buffer layers. The resistive switching involves an initial gradual increase in current associated with a drift-related halide migration within the perovskite bulk layer followed by an abrupt resistive switching associated with diffusion of mobile Ag+ conductive filamentary formation. Furthermore, we develop a dynamical model that explains the characteristic I-V curve that helps to untangle and quantify the switching regimes consistent with the experimental memristive response. This further insight into the two-step set process provides another degree of freedom in device design for versatile applications with varying levels of complexity.

In the last decade, research on "sexting" has undergone an exponential increase, giving rise to the publication of numerous studies clarifying its meaning, offering information of educational value, and favoring a good use of technology to prevent problems caused by this exchange of sexual information. The aim of this article was to analyze the production, performance, impact, and content of scientific articles evaluating the "sexting" thesaurus (title, abstract, and/or keywords) between 2009 and September 2019. Articles were sourced from two internationally recognized databases: Scopus and Web of Science. A scientometric study was then carried out on a sample of 641 articles that met the established inclusion criteria. The main findings indicate that "sexting" is a very recent research focus, but one in full growth phase, with scientific production related to the topic likely to double over the next few years. Although "sexting" has been researched worldwide, the scientific production of the US and American authors is the most notable. There were also some differences between the Scopus and Web of Science databases, mainly in the volume of production and the trend. However, the studies do show a common research line, "cyberbullying," and a common target population: adolescents. Therefore, the content analysis reveals that research on "sexting" is mostly carried out with adolescents and takes into consideration other themes such as cyberbullying, dating violence, and sexuality.

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility and effects on manual dexterity and the quality of life (QoL) of a 12-week home calligraphic training program in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: A pilot study with participants recruited from the Movement Disorders consultation at the Hospital 12 de Octubre (Madrid). The main outcome, manual dexterity, was assessed using the Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT). Secondary outcomes included clinical rating scales that contemplate aspects related to manual dexterity (DextQ-24, UPDRSII, UPDRSIII), and QoL (PDQ-39 and EuroQoL-5D). RESULTS: Thirty PD patients (57% males) with a mean age of 66.11 (9.76) years and 93% adherence rate. The PPT scores improved significantly (p < 0.0001) from T0 (start of the study) to T1 (after 24 weeks). No statistically significant change was found in DextQ-24, UPDRS-II and UPDRS-III, but a clear improvement was observed in the QoL measurement: EuroQoL-5D (p < 0.0001), PDQ-39 (p < 0.0001) and modified PDQ-39 (p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to demonstrate the feasibility and improvement in hand dexterity assessed by the PPT for patients diagnosed with PD after a 12-week home calligraphic training program. A significant improvement was noted in the QoL measurements, such as the PDQ-39, modified PDQ-39, and EuroQoL-5D.Implications for RehabilitationMost patients with Parkinson's disease suffer from impaired manual dexterity, making it difficult to perform activities of daily living such as eating, buttoning, or shaving.A 12-week home calligraphic training program could improve hand dexterity in these patients.The advantage of this home calligraphic trainingis is that it is an easy-to-perform, low-cost and no side effects.This training also improves their quality of life.
